Manayunk to Secede from Philadelphia

After years of speculation by the press, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter announced this morning that the neighborhood of Manayunk is seceding from the City of Philadelphia. “Beginning on the first of January, Manayunk will no longer be a part of the city. I have no idea who will run it now, but it sure as hell won’t be me.”

The neighborhood has always created terrible confusion for Philadelphia residents who mistakenly refer to it as “the ‘burbs,” a colloquial term meaning suburbs. Added to the city as a part of the Act of Consolidation in 1854, Manayunk never really fit in with the other Philadelphia neighborhoods. It often sat alone at the edge of the playground because it was afraid of getting picked on.

When asked his opinion of the secession, Nutter responded, “Good riddance.”
